Transform your life by teaching Tai Chi

Whether you’re looking to develop a new income stream, learn a new skill, deepen your own practice, or take a new direction in life, our instructor training programme gives you a clear and supportive pathway.

You can teach Tai Chi and help others improve their health, balance, and wellbeing.

You don’t need to be an expert. You don’t need years of experience. You simply need the willingness to learn and the desire to help others.

With over 30 years of teaching experience, Robert Agar-Hutton, the chief coach of the Agar-Hutton Tai Chi Academy offers a structured, practical programme that guides you step by step from beginner to confident instructor.

If you are serious about becoming a Tai Chi instructor, you need more than just a set of movements. You need understanding, experience, and the ability to guide others safely and effectively.

Which Path Is Right For You?

There are two routes to becoming a Tai Chi instructor with the Academy. The right choice depends on how you prefer to learn and what you want from your training.

Choose the Associate Instructor Pathway if:

⦿ You want a clear, structured step-by-step programme
⦿ You like defined goals and a fixed timeframe
⦿ You want regular guidance and accountability
⦿ You are ready to commit to consistent weekly practice
⦿ You want to begin teaching within six months

Choose the Full Instructor Training Programme if:

⦿ You prefer a more flexible, self-paced approach to training
⦿ You want to explore Tai Chi in greater depth over a longer period
⦿ You are interested in a broader range of material - not just the essentials
⦿ You see teaching as part of a longer personal journey
⦿ You want to advance through multiple levels of instructor certification

Not Sure?

Register your interest and Robert will help you decide based on your background and goals.

What This Programme Offers

This is a thorough, progressive training pathway covering both the health and wellness dimensions of Tai Chi and its traditional martial foundations. You will develop the skills and knowledge to teach with authenticity, cultural awareness, and genuine depth.

Training covers:

⦿ The complete AHTCA syllabus, explored at a pace that suits your development
⦿ Tai Chi's historical context, proven health applications, and traditional principles
⦿ How to teach different types of student safely and effectively
⦿ The practical and theoretical foundations of both Tai Chi and Qigong
⦿ Specialist areas including stress management and cognitive behavioural approaches to wellness

The programme is competency-based. You progress when you are ready, not when a calendar says so.

We believe in offering one of the most accessible Tai Chi instructor programmes in the UK, and we are committed to making professional training achievable for dedicated students at a fair cost. The value you gain - mastery, knowledge, and the ability to positively impact others - lasts a lifetime.

Training Under Expert Guidance

You train directly under Robert Agar-Hutton, who combines decades of Tai Chi experience with a professional background in coaching and stress management, including specialist training in cognitive behavioural approaches. That breadth, traditional depth alongside modern, evidence-based methods, is what you gain access to through this programme.

Ongoing training lets you develop through the instructor levels at whatever pace suits you, with annual recertification keeping your skills current and your progression on track.

"The instructor course is well structured and clearly laid out. Robert has an eye for every small detail and won’t let you get away with any mistakes. He also has a wealth of knowledge and background information on all things Tai Chi and other martial arts and is keen to pass it on."
